Not many people have heard of Mataró or the Costa de Maresme. Tucked away between the bright city lights of Barcelona and the more famous holiday destination of the Costa Brava, this region has some hidden delights and, without the foreign tourist crowds, provides a particularly Catalan visit for anyone who dares to go off the beaten track.
Mataró is the capital of the region and that’s where I now live. After an 18 year career in Air Traffic Control I became a teacher of English as a foreign language. That job has taken my wife and I around the world to Argentina, Syria, Azerbaijan, Tunisia and Vietnam but a desire to live somewhere more “normal” for a while drew us to Spain. A year in the city of Pamplona was a good introduction to Spanish life but we had a yearning to live near the beach and have a bit more sunshine. With friends already living in Mataró, we had visited several times and were already entranced.
Now I’d like to share Mataró and the region with you. Perhaps it will inspire you to visit.
